Commission of the European Communities (EC)

Komisija Europskih zajednica (EK)

The executive arm of the European Union with powers of initiative, implementation, management and control. As such it is also responsible for the implementation of the EU programmes. It is the guardian of the Treaties and the embodiment of the interests of the Community. In 2007, it is composed of twenty seven independent members, including a President and Vice-Presidents who are appointed for a five-year term. The Commissioners are assisted by an administration made up of Directorates General and specialised departments whose staff are divided mainly between Brussels and Luxembourg.

Izvršno tijelo Europske unije s ovlastima inicijative, provedbe, upravljanja i kontrole. Kao takvo nadležna je i za provedbu programa EU. Komisija osigurava provedbu osnivačkih ugovora i utjelovljuje interese Zajednice. U 2007. godini sastavljena je od dvadesetsedam nezavisnih članova (povjerenika), uključujući predsjednika i zamjenike predsjednika, imenovanih na pet godina. Članovima Komisije pomaže administracija sastavljena od glavnih uprava i specijaliziranih odjela, čije je osoblje smješteno uglavnom u Bruxellesu i Luksemburgu.
