European Commission officially confirmed that suspension on the signature for contracts from PHARE 2006 program has been cancelled. The total value of these contracts is 52 million euros. It is considered from Bruxelles, that Croatia has made a great progress in fulfillment of benchmarks set by the Commission - i.e. the Central Finance and Contracting Agency has been founded and many new staff has been employed there. The quality of the documents has also been improved and an essential quality control has been established, by employing new staff in Quality Assurance Sector.
While the EU member state Bulgaria was punished by suspension of approximately half billion euros from EU funds because of corruption and bad management this week, Croatia has been given after seven months of "reconsideration" a green light, which shows that the shortcomings in the system are solved. The contracting deadline for the projects from PHARE 2006 is expiring 30 November 2008, when contracting rate for mentioned programme will be known. Furthermore, 5 million euros from IPA 2007 fund, which was decreased from 45 to 40 million euros, is returned to Croatia.
