PHARE 2005 project on enhancement of environmental inspection presented

The project, worth over EUR 2 million, was presented by the head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Croatia, Vincent Degert, and Environmental Protection, Physical Planning and Construction Minister Marina Matulovic Dropulic.

The overall objective of the project is to improve the environmental situation in Croatia through enhanced environmental inspection. Specific objectives of the project are the preparation of environmental inspection institutions for implementation of the new environmental legislation which has been harmonised with the EU environmental acquis, improvement of the inspection organisational structure, introduction of continuous training and education for environmental inspectors, improvement of the reporting system and close cooperation between all state bodies engaged in environmental inspection.

The project consists of technical assistance and supply of a range of IT, communications and video conferencing equipment to support efficient environmental protection inspection.

Degert said that the environmental protection issue was very important in Croatia and the EU. We are confident that Croatian citizens will benefit from our cooperation with the ministry and the Croatian authorities, he said. (Hina)
